Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA – 6% ABV – The gang from Milton, DE continue to produce incredibly popular and unconventional craft beers for a very discerning audience. This one, the 60 Minute IPA, was a good example of craft beer at its finest. I’m normally not a huge fan with hoppy beers, I’ve said this before. But if done right, it can be a nice and enjoyable treat. Such is the case with this fine libation. Its bottle has it labeled as “The continually-hopped India Pale Ale. ” But smelling it, I understand why. Get a good whiff of this and you’ll feel like you’ve been skiing a black diamond run and you just crashed into a pine tree. A little bit of citrus aroma also sneaks in, like a grapefruit somehow found its way to the tree also.

To look at it is a nice sight. A nice amber color is what I get when I look at this, only to get lost in the steady stream of tiny bubbles, racing their way to the top of the glass. A massive foamy white head sits at the top of the beer, emitting more of that pine aroma. So I wonder if that is what I’m left with in the flavor department. Will I be sucking down another tart, bitter, dry beer that is going to make me want to grab something else? Only one way to find out…

The first pull told me almost all I needed to know about this beer. Right up front, I get the piney hop taste, but it mellows a bit and lets the malt come through somewhat. But before you know it, the grapefruit citrus kick has come into play and we’re right back to the drawing board – Pine. The lacing left in the glass seemed a bit thin for the most part, although there were some soapy suds left in the glass as I wound my way down to the bottom.

The thing that amazed me the most about this beer was that while I knew what I was getting into, I had no clue the finish would be as mild as it was. I didn’t have that awful bitter taste in my mouth that made me want to regurgitate. I was actually enjoying this one a bit. Perhaps Dogfish Head just lured a nonconformist in the hop world over to the dark side. This will require further research, and expanded coverage into their 90 Minute and 120 Minute IPA varieties.
