Pipeworks Lizard King

The Lizard….is King!  Pipework’s Brewing out of Chicago consistently pumps out amazing beers and the Lizard King is no exception.  This mosaic hopped pale ale is everything I expect from this style.  Full disclosure…I used to despise mosaic hops because I thought it had this harsh bite to them that ruined beers. I have since come to love these hops and Lizard King showcases this hop in all of its glory.  Here is my review of Lizard King.

Appearance: Slightly hazy pale yellow gold color with a frothy white head that dissipates quickly but provides wonderful lacing.

Aroma: Straight pineapple and citrus (grapefruit and tangerine) with a slight resin presence in the back.  A simple pale malt bill allows the hops to shine but provides a slight but pleasant cracker aroma.  No off-aromas (of course).

Flavor: Wonderful pineapple flavor up front with some great nectarine on the tongue.  The middle really highlights some onion from what I would guess is from the mosaic.  Slight bready malt bill provides a good balance but this beer is all about the hops.  Finishes somewhat one dimensional with a pine hop bitterness bite similar to an IPA .  Clean finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-Light body with a dry finish.  Medium carbonation that carries the beer well.

Overall: Another fantastic beer by Pipeworks.  This one reminds me why I came around to loving mosaic hops.  This crisp and hoppy APA pushes the style but in a good way.  Lizard King is the beer for you if you are looking for a tropical yet dank APA that hits the spot.  All hail the Lizard King!
