Staying away from my comfort with hoppy beers not only did I leave my favorite beer style but I also left the mainland. Tonight I tasted a beer from Kona Brewing Co. which is on the Big Island in Hawai’i. This is the stomping ground of my friend Maika who likes to be called the Hawaiian Princess (maholla). Ha, isnt she cute? The only beer that I’ve had from this brewery before is their Longboard Island Lager which I give a thumbs up. Even though this is a Hawaiian brew this brewery is still tied to Portland. It’s website says that “Under strict guidance, Kona Brewing Company also produces its bottled beer and mainland draft beer in Portland, Oregon …” I believe they partner with one of the original Portland micro breweries Widmer Brothers Brewing if I’m not mistaken (info came from one of my ex girlfriends who had an uncle that worked at Widmer). Kona also has connections with a brewery in New Hampshire.
Reaching my palate for this post was the Kona brewery’s seasonal brew, part of their Aloha Series, called KoKo Brown. Its specs come in at a weak 5.5 ABV and 28 IBU. Meh. The KoKo Brown is brewed with “toasted coconuts” and that taste and smell is obviously present. The beer’s color is dark brown/reddish and had a respectable head. Even though I could taste the coconuts it was faint. The beer lacked a bold and enjoyable taste like Mitt Romney lacking the ability to tell the truth. The finish was of course coco-nutty with some more expected sweetness but it disappointingly doesn’t last long. I guess that’s a good way to put it. Because it was nice and cold even tho not bold and weak I didn’t favor it but at the same time I didn’t completely dislike it. I would drink it as a last resort to be honest. With that said perhaps you shoud try it and taste for yourself. Okole maluna!
