Lagunitas Sucks – 7.85%ABv 64IBU
Lagunitas Sucks….say what? Don’t let the name fool you.
So, put down the malt and back away slowly…because it is hop time.
Lagunitas Sucks is a Double India Pale Ale (DIPA) seasonal beer brewed by Lagunitas Brewing Company. Lagunitas Sucks was originally brewed in 2011 as a Brown Shugga’ substitute during some brewery construction which caused capacity issues. This beer comes weighing in at 7.85% ABV with 64 IBUs.
The beer pours a nice golden orange color with a great amount of white head, that leaves a fantastic amount of lacing to remind you of the deliciousness you just consumed. The aroma is a citrus bomb, specifically grapefruit, orange and lemon with just a hint of grass and resin. Your nose will thank you for introducing the two.
The taste…oh the taste. Upon the first sip you get a ton of grapefruit that plays well with the other citrus notes. The grapefruit lingers the entire time with some nice lemon/tangerine and grassy notes. Sucks has a strong bitter finish with a slight residual sweetness. A slight malt backbone (I suspect Pale and some Crystal) that obviously plays second fiddle to the great hop flavor. This DIPA is not cloyingly sweet like some IPAs, which I appreciate. The alcohol is almost not there, which makes this an easy to drink DIPA…which could get you into trouble.
Overall, great beer that will not disappoint.
Lagunitas Sucks should be called Lagunitas Rocks…my socks off.
