Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale – 4.4% ABV
As mentioned before in another post, Lazy Magnolia hails from Deep South Mississippi. After watching a video on their website, an attractive woman tells you the viewer that at Lazy Magnolia, they like to make beer for those who don’t like beer. Now how is this possible? You come up with interesting flavor combinations and produce something that doesn’t taste like piss. The gang at Lazy Magnolia had an idea for doing the first known beer to be brewed with Pecans. They got something like this brew here – their Southern Pecan Nut Brown Ale.
The bottle is adorned with a label hosting multiple shades of brown. Fitting for a nut brown ale. Upon pouring, the brew produces a nice dark mahogany brown color. There is a little bit of an off-white head that develops, but it fades fairly quickly. Next up – better get my nose it. Upon first whiff, a nutty aroma is definitely present. Caramel and nuts are what I’m getting out of this. Hopefully the taste will be the same. And on that note…
Taking the first pull of this new brew, immediately I get the malty richness one should expect from a brown ale, but shortly after I get a nutty characteristic which adds a nice depth to the flavor profile. The beer has a very light hop presence, allowing the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors to speak out to you. The beer isn’t too thick, sort of watery, but the taste grows on you as you drink it. This is definitely unique to the nut brown ale category and something I wouldn’t mind having again.
I did some research and found that Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup. I have to give them props on that.
