Anderson Valley Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout 5.7% ABV

I was listening to a podcast yesterday that interviewed a brewer from Anderson Valley Brewery, a brewery that you might be familiar with from their Brother’s David Dubbel and Tripel beers. If not don’t worry neither was I until I looked it up and realized I saw those two beers all the time and my local beer mart. On the podcast they kept raving about this Oatmal stout they were drinking and I thought to myself I got to try that, so I did. I went out and bought a sixer of Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout and birthed this write up.

In this category I have had two beasts of Oatmeal stouts, Sam Smith’s and Rouge’s so I’m looking forward to this beer. From the nose you smell this burnt/smokey quality to it followed by a hint of chocolate. Tasting it though is where the fun begins. At first sip I got this complex dark chocolate, coffee taste followed by this incredible smokiness. In the aftertaste you get that oatmeal gritty chewy flavor that you look for in an oatmeal stout, only with this one, its a little more smokey than I’ve ever had before. The feel of this is an awesomely creamy smooth texture which is always a plus.

The ABV of this beer is low which makes it a good to drink all night, definitely not a sipper. How does this rank up there with the greats? Its right in the running for one of the better Oatmeal Stouts I’ve ever tried but call me loco but I’m going with the folks across the pond. That’s not to say this isn’t good, in fact its great, I just wish it was a touch sweeter than it is to counter that smokey bitterness.

Stay Thirsty but Stay Different!

Pardon the over exposed picture, I didn't feel like reshooting it :(
